Bryant earned national recognition during a spectacular high school career at Lower Merion High School located in the Philadelphia suburb of Lower Merion. His father coached him his sophomore (second) year of high school. At Adidas ABCD camp, Bryant earned the 1995 senior MVP award,[14] while playing alongside future NBA teammate Lamar Odom.[15] While in high school, then 76ers coach John Lucas invited Bryant to workout and scrimmage with the team, where he played one-on-one with Jerry Stackhouse.[16] In his senior year of high school, Bryant led the Aces to their first state championship in 53 years. During the run, he averaged 30.8 points, 12 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 4.0 steals, and 3.8 blocked shots in leading the Aces to a 31–3 record.[17] He ended his career as Southeastern Pennsylvania’s all-time leading scorer at 2,883 points, surpassing Wilt Chamberlain and Lionel Simmons.[18] Bryant received several awards for his performance his senior year including being named Naismith High School Player of the Year, Gatorade Men’s National Basketball Player of the Year, a McDonald’s All-American, and a USA Today All-USA First Team player.[19] Bryant’s varsity coach, Greg Downer, commented that Bryant was “a complete player who dominates”.[17] In 1996, Bryant took R&B singer Brandy Norwood to his senior prom,[20] though the two were/are just friends. His SAT score of 1080[21] would have ensured his basketball scholarship to various top-tier colleges. Ultimately, however, the 17-year-old Bryant made the decision to go directly into the NBA. Bryant’s news was met with a lot of publicity at a time when prep-to-pro NBA players wasn’t very common (Kevin Garnett being the only exception in 20 years). Bryant has stated that had he decided to go to college after high school, he would have attended Duke University.[22]

James was born on December 30, 1984 in Akron, Ohio. James attended St. Vincent–St. Mary High School in Akron, where he became a starter during his freshman year for the Fighting Irish. He averaged 21 points and 6.2 rebounds, and led the team to a 23–1 record, en route to the Division III state title. Keith Dambrot now head coach at the University of Akron, was the head coach at St. Vincent–St. Mary. Coach Dambrot started working with James doing $1 clinics at a local recreation center.In his sophomore year, James averaged 25.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 3.8 steals.He led the team to a 26–1 record and a Division III state title for the second straight season.He was the first sophomore to be named Ohio’s “Mr. Basketball” and also became the first sophomore ever selected to the USA Today All-USA First Team.

Michael Jeffrey Jordanwas born in Brooklyn, New york in 1963. He was the youngest of four boys born to James and Deloris Jordan. James Jordan was the son of a share cropper from rural North Carolina , and he was in Brooklyn to attend a school that trained employees of General Electric. Jordan’s mother, Deloris was a homemaker until her children were old enough to attend school, and then she became a bank clerk. When Jordan was about seven years old, in 1970, his family moved to Wilmington, North Carolina, the town he would later consider to be his hometown. He began playing basketball at an early age, often with his older.As a freshman in high school, Jordan joined his school basketball team. It was on his high school team that Jordan chose the jersey number he was later to make famous as a pro, number 23. When later asked why he chose that number, he replied to the Associated Press, “I wanted to wear No. 45 in high school, but my older brother (Larry) wore that number. So I decided to go with half of 45, which is actually 22½.” Jordan at first had trouble standing out on the school team. In fact, only a year after joining the team, as a tenth grader, he was cut from the varsity team. But this only pushed him to work harder at perfecting his game. As he later said on his Web site, “I think that not making the Varsity team drove me to really work at my game, and also taught me that if you set goals, and work hard to achieve them—the hard work can pay off.”
